West Passage is like nothing I have read before, a coming-of-age but complex, slow burn that I can't put down.
The world-building is amazing, the world is weird, forget everything you know about what this and that can be, this reinvents the definition of words and visuals. At the same time, all seem very recognizable with a very historical medieval feeling with the beekeeping, illuminated books, scholars, and sense of religious hierarchy with mothers and ladies.
When we thought all had been done and we were left with retellings and mashup styles this author brings us a refreshing, and creative project.
We follow the journey of two main characters who decide to leave their tower for different reasons. They are from the Grey Tower, but each tower of the palace has different colors and functions.
It's a discover reading in many senses because we learn more about the world through these characters who are visiting and disturbing the routine of others who seem to only care about their micro cosmos until the signs of the Beast returning are visible. The Beast always brings great change to their world.
The author illustrated the chapter titles, and the titles are always interesting sentences.
It made me a fan.
