5๏ธโฃIf you never read Jenn Lyons, this standalone will make you an immediate fan. She is an auto buy for me.ย
This is a standalone well-written written driven by action, humor, confident characters, dragons, dragon riders, dragon-rider haters... or lovers, depends... a bit of heat but not focused on romance.ย
It's high stakes. Every scene is a dead sentence that the characters must resolve. Divided into ten parts with intrigue, berserk dragons, a plan, another plan, and one to survive the first two, a heist to steal from one of the nastiest dragons ever ruling and other side quests. Layers and layers of story, adventure, and goals keep changing because this gang is terrible at making flawless plans. Fun. It's just good, entertaining with a hint of modern humor and ideals.
If you start reading and thinking that the author is not aware of our questions and doubts about the plot direction, think again, she is in perfect control of every bit, even the parts that look unexplained. The book answers all the questions and closes all ends. But... I will miss these characters terribly if this is really a standalone, so... I do hope this is a pilot for a new series. I'm in.ย
For new readers, takes a few pages to get used to keeping up with the fast rhythm of this author's style but as soon as we focus on Anahrod as the top main character (of this cast) we get it. I love a fantasy book with a large cast and short chapters with different povs.
Great and unique details to the worldbuilding. Very modern, not only in dialogue but in way of thinking.ย
Very interesting ring system where the character wear their social and garden rings that not only tell their social status but also their sexual (sometimes detailed) preferences.
It's hard to put it down, I already have so many scenes/episodes that are my top fav that I feel that I read a trilogy or more instead. There are amazing and diverse settings. Some images will stay in our minds for a long time, like the first time Anahrod had help to face her fear of heights.ย
Then there are dragons. Whether it's leviathans, dragons, or other massive creatures whenever they appear, we can feel their presence and escalating danger.ย
