My Review:
4 stars
These fantasy novellas are more fantasy epic with classical tropes than LitRPG. The author is knowledgeable of his world creation and characters and gives us a lot of information, even in just a few pages. The first one is an origin story, plot-driven and very fast-paced, including heroes' journey favorites like the chosen one, coming of age, a wise, magical mentor, magic awakening, training and trials, war, and good facing evil. That's just the first novel, and it helps establish the world and main plot. It starts with fairy tale vibes, cartoonish characters, and vibes that add some humor to the story. An orphan born with red eyes with a mysterious origin is saved by the wise queen and remains in the castle working in the kitchens and suffering bullying until his magic manifests tied to emotions. Then, he switches to being under the tutelage of a wizard and a master of arms (both with a relevant past). Filled with action, well-written action scenes are very visual and exciting. 16-year-old Chip goes from zero to hero, but there are more adventures, and his part in the war has just started.
It's entertaining, and if you like novellas like the ones of Morgan Rice, you'll like the homage to many epic classic fantasy elements on this one.
It is too fast for me, but I think the author will slow down and give us more depth of character, fewer repetitions, and hopefully less deus ex machina as the series progresses. Just for those elements, I'll take one point, but I am already starting book 3 soon.
