Beautifully written. A historical story set in Rome in the 17th century. Giulia is based on a real person. This family (different relationships, generations, and ages) of women standing together to help each other. The author punctuated the end of the chapters (not all) with a poem that shows what is happening to one person is not unique; others are going through the same, or others are acting abusively as well. The Secret Apothecary keeps running even when it's dangerous.
I couldn't put this book down, literally. When I finished it, I hugged it, and I carried it with me for 2 days wherever I went. I still do. It's on my desk where I paint. It will be next to my bed when I sleep. It made me get the Blood Water Paint and trust this author's writing. I know this author will come up with great books in the future that I will not miss, not even the middle-grade ones.
